Photographer's Note

On of the odder and, to me, less attractive parts of a Hamer bull jumping ceremony is the whipping. Female relatives of the initiate goad young men to whip their backs. In this way they demonstrate the strength and resilience of their family. A girl that has no scars is thought of as shameful. Part of this is pretending that the whipping doesn't hurt and to insult those doing the whipping encouraging them to try harder. I reckon they have a more difficult part to play than the young man jumping the bulls. By having scars they demonstrate a debt owed to them by the initiate.

This girls were walking to the location for the ceremony, their shirts raised to show their scars and to acquire some new ones.
