Photographer's Note

Through our guide we had been talking about the importance of cattle to the Daasanach people with a man from the village. My travel companion asked what is more important, your children or your cattle. I was a bit surprised by the question, but even more surprised by the answer; cattle are more important, if you have cattle you can make more children, but without cattle you have nothing.

A precarious life.

The Daasanach village we visited was near Omorate, a stones throw from the South Sudan and Kenyan borders with Ethiopia.
