Photographer's Note

Although not as well known as the statues of Ramesses 2 just 100 metres to the left, this group of rock temples carved into the cliff for his beloved companion Queen Nefertari, are equally fascinating. Both were moved and reassembled here in 1968 before the Aswan Dam was completed in 1970. They were both built to commemorate victory over the Hittites at the Battle of Kadesh, just upstream of Lake Homs on the Syrian Lebanese border, in 1274 BC.
