Great auldal 2011-09-18 10:07

A great mix of colour, movement, light and shade - striking and full of wonder! Also I hadn't known about this before. Is this a performance mainly for tourists?

Default To auldal: its traditional & done each year

Hi Alastair,

This dance is performed every year in the month of Kartik (around November). Many tourist do visit as it is quite popular and has been performing since more than 300 years during the Malla Kings. The last & the second last day is the most beautiful as there is fire around the dancers and the crowd is overwhilming. The dance started around 9:00 pm and I had to capture my place at 7:00 pm to get to the front to take photograph. There is no seat to sit down but all stand up and watch for hours. Its worth seeing.
Before, it used to be a month long dance. Due to budget and other reasons, now it only 7 days.
