Default Just a note about no-notes :)

Just curious if anyone here feels the same way . . .

When you see a picture where the photographer leaves nothing for notes, absolutely blank, does it bother you? Even just a little bit?

Just wondering since I find it easier to make comments to images that are posted with some kind of notes, at least a bit of detail regarding the background of the image. I would think that there has to be something to say about the picture.

And if someone is looking for feedback, then maybe provide some dialogue (notes) when posting an image. Like starting a conversation . . .

I just imagine how someone would respond if I walked up to them, showed them a picture I justed printed with a title on top ""Ocean Sunset", and the only words coming from me are "_____________" . . . Can hardly expect the viewer to respond to such limited conversation.

Anyway . . . just sharing . . . :) . . . I understand and respect "each to his/her own . . ."

Peter

Yes it does bother me to see a photo without notes.

There have been numerous discussions about notes or fitting photos in the past, no need to raise them again but the learning is things won't change.
Based on that I decided I had to change and added the following phrase to my intro page:
"Because I want to learn about the world here I do not critique photos that have no note."

I now stick to that.

I don't go quite as far as PixelTerror although I agree with the sentiments expressed. Photographs with notes are far more likely to be critiqued by me than those without.

I agree with you, the lack of notes gives me the impression that the photographer hiself does not thinks relevant his photo. Moreover I like to know not only the Earth, but the people living on, therefore a photo without a note seems me a masked person.

Yes, it bothers me. I have remarked in a few critiques that some pictures would benefit from having a note. Even if it's just a little bit of information such as what the subject is, or why the photographer was there, just a few lines.

In the same way, if I saw a critique that just said 'this photo sucks' it would bother me, the whole point of the site (as I see it) is to learn something about the world (and for someone like me, to learn a bit about photography as well).

As the others, it does bother me.
If the photographer is new on the site, I advise him/her that it would be good to put a note with the picture.
If the photographer have been here for a while, and is used to leaving no note, I usually don't leave a critique, as Jean-Yves does. Often, no notes on the pictures goes with no text in the presentation page, and sometimes not much critique given. TE is about sharing and I would expect people to share back.

On TE, I like better seeing a picture with many technical flaws and a good note, than a stunning picture with absolutely no words of explanation. Of course, many TE addicts give beautiful pictures and write thoughtful notes: the perfect combo! :^)

Yes, it does bother me. I very seldom critique photos with no notes unless it is really an outstanding photo.

The reason I left another site to come here was that notes were rareley left, some explanation of location or motivation of why you took the shot is always helpful
