Great tyro 2020-04-13 13:33

Ciao caro Silvio,

Your note is fascinating - and from it I believe that you say that this fountain and large water tank was built for the purposes of the "tanning" of hides to produce leather for shoes. And that was supposed to be its main purpose - and that women were not allowed to use it for washing their clothes - am I right?

So this must have been the site of a quite large tannery at one time. I know that in mediaeval times tanneries were a source of very considerable pollution as the chemicals they used could poison watercourses and rivers - that was certainly a major problem in large cities like London.

Anyway, it is unfortunate that these tanks no longer hold water but your photograph shows the layout of them perfectly. Also intriguing is the shallow flight of steps which we can see through the triple arches in the distance.

Lovely soft light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and clarity.

Wonderful!

Kind Regards,

John.
