Dear Bev,
Hoi! I've been looking at this picture for an hour (intermittently, I have to confess!) and I'm still waiting for this workshop photo you promised us!
Oh, well, never mind - this one will do! Ah, yes, those lovely words of Robert Browning:
"And though the fields look rough with hoary dew,
All will be gay when noontide wakes anew
The buttercups, the little children’s dower,
- Far brighter than this gaudy melon-flower!"
Must be at least sixty years since I first learned that but it immediately sprang to mind as soon as I saw this lovely photograph - now over an hour ago. :o)
Your village looks delightful across this foreground meadow of bright yellow buttercups - whose bright colour gets stronger and stronger with distance - while the distant grazed fields are not so blessed with such bright gaiety - Hey, that's quite poetic too, don't you think?
A beautiful photograph which in time will remind us of the sunniest and driest springtime we have had for years.
Beautiful!
You two take care and stay safe.
Kind Regards,
John.

First, sorry for keeping you waiting. I hope you found it worth the wait!!
Thank you so much for your warm and poetic critique. You know, I find it a real sadness that the word 'gay' has such different, modern connotations. It's a word that hasn't quite been replaced since it lost its original meaning. Still 'gaiety' hasn't quite moved into that bracket, yet! Isn't it funny how we remember poetry from childhood. I can still recite the whole 'The Owl and the Pussycat' and most of the 'The Highwayman'. Fortunately, Milton's 'Paradise Lost' has mostly faded into oblivion. Hope you are both well and, also, keep safe, Bev ![]() |
