Great HD462 2005-06-29 13:02

I love this type of photo, the cascading water looks almost like an oil painting. This is something I'm going to have to try and do at some point (I tried a couple of weeks ago and failed).

Well shot!

Default To HD462: trick for waterfalls

I've done a fair bit of playing around with moving water; the one trick that I've found most useful is to use 2 polarizers- this way you cut down the amount of light as much as you want. This is really really important for waterfalls, which of course tend to be bright (unless you shoot at dusk, which is what I was doing before I got the 2nd polarizer!).

Thanks for the reply. I don't think I'd be able to use polarizers with my camera, as it's a compact with 3x zoom, not an SLR, or do you just hold them over the lens?. I was hoping to be able to do something just by using a slow shutter speed and a tripod. Maybe have to wait until I get a more expensive camera then.

Thanks.

[sorry, I missed that you had re-replied...]

You could just hold the polarizers (remember you really need 2 to be able to cut the light down a lot) in front of the camera. A tripod or some very stable mount is required. In my photo, I actually just propped up the camera on rocks; the bigger problem was water spray- no getting around that! In any case, use the largest f/# as possible.

Thanks for the reply. Something I'll have to have a play with sometime.
