As you are discovering, the whole points / smilies system creates strong feelings from both camps. Back in the 'olden days' when I first joined the site the tendency was to use the unsmiling smiley if you were critiquing an image which you thought had a number of weaknesses; the middle green smiley for an image you thought was good; and the bright green one only for those images you thought were exceptional. It was rare to receive a bad response from the photographer for using the first 2 smilies if your critiques backed up the usage. Regrettably, to my mind anyway, we now have a situation where many only use the bright green smiley and also seem to take it as a crime only slightly less heinous than murder to give them anything less.
