If at all possible I would suggest you use a more powerful off camera flash mounted above head height to provide more illumination to the face with light fall off to the floor. This will provide a greater centre of focus on the head and less on the bike. To achieve this doesn't have to be expensive - an external flash, an extension cord and someone to hold the flash (or a cheap light stand) will do. |

The spirit of the picture is in the washing hanging between the two buildings, the balconies and the small aerial community. Down below...could be anywhere and cropping the two people bottom left is a distraction (either they should be in or out of the picture, not cropped). So, if it is possible I would recommend just focusing on the top half and croppng out the street and vehicles (a bit cliche but stronger than the rather diverse image that you are currently showing. I guess it was a bright day as the background is strongly blown out, this is a shame as there is a lot more detail to be captured. |

Though after a while it becomes clear. I think you achieved your objective. |

There is the obvious assocaition between the numbers and the train. But without a not it becomes an abstract image without any real story. |

A tripod as already mentioned may have given a bit more sharpness, but having said that for a web image and small prints it is probably fine. |

The initial impact of all the silhouettes is quite amazing, then you notice the boy at the front - has he spotted the camera? is he waving, stretching or pointing. The two people either side framing the boy and then all the groups of people behind involved in a myriad of different activities. And then by the top of the frame, it is just a mass of people - the abstract nature of which caps the image perfectly.
This is a great picture - as are many in your gallery, and i like it very much. |

Somtimes it is more important just to be their than to have the latest ang greatest equipment. |

To put this into context, I spent several months in Africa looking at the telecommunications industry and how much demand there is for telephone services, internet, etc...
To cut a long story short, the second most important utility that most people want (the first being fresh water) is a telephone. This is above electricity, gas, fuels or any other type of service. Demand for telephone services in Africa is very very high and a lot of work is ongoing to ensure that they have access to at least some form of real time communication (phone - whether mobile or fixed).
Celtel is an interesting case study of an African company which has grown quickly and expanded to meet the basic requirements of the people. It really is an African success story - something that western people don't often give African's credit for : yes African people can set up businesses and run them better than their western counterparts. |

As to the picture - what is there to say? Angle is OK, nothing too dramatic and captures the essence of the scene without getting overly artsy about it.
Thanks |

And yours, with colour and a bit of woosh certainly makes your final your project sound a lot more interesting than many.
The only question I have is wouldn't it be easier to model the turbulant flow of a variably poured liquid down a constricted pipe to determine what is the quickest way that you can get the liquid from glass (a) to stomach (b) without experiencing blowback or spillage. Having practiced on this very important subject then surely modelling ignition of gasses by lighter should be easy ;-0
Good luck with your project. |

I really like the abstract nature of the picture. The slight fleck of colour in the sky beind the water helps to break up a monochrome picture, and it is the difference between the hard contrast of the water in the foreground against the soft mucky weather at the back.
Great one Henk - but next time you come back to Europe can you bring us some nicer weather? |

It also gives each child an individual personality which really comes through in the pictures. The only thing that I would think about is whether a greater shutter speed would freeze the action and give sharper features to some of the faces, or whether keeping the action blurred works better - either way it is still a great picture. |

There is something very particular about the way that the children are dressed and standing that is distinctively Turkish in its manner. Great use of colour and composition to create a dialogue with the viewer. Perhaps a little underexposed - shadows could do with a little more detail, but then that could be my computer rather than the original image. Thanks |
