I haven't commented on either TE or TL in literally more than a year. But when I was casually browsing through the TE gallery to see what was new, and to come upon your photo having no comments or critiques, I felt compelled to comment here. The composition of this photo is excellent: the dead pelican is just off-center in the foreground, balancing with the line of live, crowded pelicans in the upper background. The visual juxtaposition really contrasts the lone, dead pelican, whom we see in detail, with the live pelicans far away. Rich tones and great contrasts in the sand dimples and the shadow of the dead pelican too. I love the vertical cropping and the angle of the shot from above, allowing the dead pelican's neck and beak to "point" to the pelicans in the background creates flow and continuity. You've used the natural lighting well and there's great sharpness and focus. An all-around excellent shot that gets its point across in an expressive, poignant, and creative way. Thanks for sharing :)

Those burqas are not ancient at all, they're incredibly modern. The reason they were created is to mark the "new" Afghanistan that Al-Qaeda wanted to establish. It's political, not religious. But many Westerners do not know that women could dress less restrictively in ancient times than they can now.

Hi Andrew, I was searching around people's accounts and TrekLens and found out you had one here on TrekEarth, so I looked in your gallery and especially noticed this. This temple here is Wat Arun (Wat Arunratchawararam), and it is amazing because every single detail and decoration on the temple's surface is made with strategically-arranged and adhered bits of ceramics and china that were used as ballast (extra weight) for cargo ships that would come into Bangkok. I have taken an art history course on southeast Asia and it just blew me away learning about this. Amazing shot, with excellent sense of scale with the point of view chosen. I really like the play on scale, with the statue looking enormous, when it's actually much smaller than the temple. Beautiful subject, very unique vantage point, love the clean flat blue sky it all pops out from. The bit of the statue that's out-of-focus at the bottom is a little distracting, but I understand this is a somewhat difficult angle to shoot from. Good vertical framing to create balance and a good composition. TFS! -Lara

You and your imagination! hehe, nice colors and contrasts. Only thing I'll pick on is the overexposed bit of falling water at the right half, which is a little distracting. Otherwise the clarity and detail is great. I can also imagine, maybe the "wedding" film you are doing could be shot near this, or the camera pans over the moving water to make its way to the small figure (at the left in the far background), who is a main "character" in the film. Hmmm.... -Lara

Wonderful panorama of a beautiful city scene. I can barely remember Montreal but I really hope to visit one day, my mom always tells me about how beautiful it is. And good balance between the glass modern building and the trees and fountain, organic shapes and forms, on the left. Great element of life with the small figures of people scattered about, and nice colors. The black thick frame at the top and bottom really emphasizes the horizontal cropping and length. TFS! -Lara

Such a wonderful and different view of Middle Eastern women, especially older Middle Eastern women, on TE! I love the strength and confidence she has! You have captured the motion and strong will of the women around her too, and your POV and sharp qualith of the photo makes her pop out. Thankyou so much for posting such a strong and powerful photo that defies traditional ideas about women. Just amazing! -Lara

A little fat? Are you joking?! If that's the case then I must be obese, according to your ridiculous beauty standards of women! And if you want to show the "art of the belly dancer" I would recommend showing her face and whole body in the middle of more dramatic movement. And there's not enough balance between the foreground, which is too bright, and the background, which is too dark. Avoid using flash. And how is the size of her body relevant to the photo here? We can see whether she is supposedly "fat" or not ourselves, thankyou. -Lara

Two kinds of pussy...wow Siamak, you really take the cake for being a misogynist pervert. I don't care if you are offended by this note, I am so sick and tired of looking at this crap that is not even pulled off by admin. It really needs to. I am constantly offended by your photos! Who do you think you are taking shots of this woman like that? Post this stuff on Playboy, not TrekEarth! Use some better ethics when taking photos. This is freaking disgusting! -Lara

I would have to agree with half the people here that this photo does not belong on TrekEarth. If you want to post offensive photos of women for perverts who like to ogle them when these poor women do not even know, post it on another site intended for that. TrekEarth is for learning about different parts of the world, not for learning the 10 easiest ways to objectify women. Thanks a freakin' lot for reminding me, a woman, that I cannot go anywhere in this damned world without being rated, checked, and ogled to no end. Oh, and great way to drive your point home about how women aren't people but just walking eye candy by lopping off her head! If I found out that someone was taking voyeuristic shots of my body and not only keeping them but posting them online I would find that guy and break his camera. This photo is straight up disrespectful to women and to the men here who have more photographic integrity! -Lara

Gertrude Stein...gotta do more research on her. Great shot with the rain coming down coupled with the statue's pose. So melancholy and yet a nice tribute with the note. Beautiful surroundings with the trees and good use of lighting. Yes, we feminists are often left alone and misunderstood....thanks for sharing. -Lara
