You will probably think this is nothing special, but I think that eight nice ladies wearing such colourful clothes are really very special.

This is from Tarrafal, a small town in the northern part of Cape Verde's main island Santiago, a couple of hours by bus from the capital Praia. In the workshop you can see more salesladies in Tarrafal, one photo also featuring large umbrellas, the other the country's president. All photos were taken in March 2006 with my first digital camera, a Canon Ixus 750.

Salesladies and a salesman. The man on most of the posters is Pedro Pires, who had been re-elected as president of Cape Verde a few weeks earlier. He was Head of state from 2001 to 2011. It may be worth noting that Cape Verde is regarded as one of the most stable democracies in the world, where political power has changed hands peacefully several times. The Economist Intelligence Unit, a British based analysis company, put Cape Verde at the 23rd place in its Democracy Index for 2016, narrowly below the USA. (First place went to Norway, followed by Iceland and Sweden.)
