Photographer’s Note

Let me do another small jump in my Spain travelogue to present you this majestic baroque palace that lies just a few Kms South of Segovia and about 80 Km North of Madrid. I still want to post a couple of photos of Avila and then I'll post some shots done in Segovia the day before this.

I guess I wasn't much inspired that day, as I don't find anything worth posting besides this one. Having forgotten the manual focus switched ruined a couple of shots, the harsh Summer light and the renovation works going on didn't help me, but I am sure the place offered much more opportunities than I was able to find.

I was surprised to see that the palace and its great gardens is so little represented in TE and that encouraged me doing this post.

The palace was the Summer residence of the Spanish Kings during 200 years. I guess that its elevated location on the Northern slopes of Sierra de Guadarrama, the mountain massif that makes the Northern skyline of Madrid, implies that the blasing heats of Summer of Madrid and even Segovia, where there is another much more famous royal palace, aren't experienced there. The construction was ordered in the early 18th century by Philip V. The resemblances with the palace that his grandfather Louis XIV built in Versailles, where he was born, are obvious even for an ignorant in Architecture like myself.
