Port a Churaich, Isle of Iona.

On the southern tip of Iona, Port a Churaich or Columba's Bay as it is also known, is where Saint Columba landed in the 563 AD, bringing Christianity to Scotland.
He was granted land by the warrior kings of the Gaels of Dál Riata on which to found a monastery, and by the time of Columba's death in 597 AD the influence of his church had spread as far as Ireland, Pictland and Northumbria.
The influence of Iona declined after the 8th Century, when the Vikings turned up and trashed the place. Today Iona is a popular place of pilgrimage, but if you can manage to avoid all the Christians it makes a wonderful place to visit.
