Valaam is pearl of Ladoga Lake. It is located in northern part of lake where depth reaches 235m. On rocky shores of numerous gulfs and straits sketes of Orthodox monastery are settled.
I made one day trip on this island by ship from St.-Petersburg. (16 photos)
White Sea Aerial 2008 by Olga Shpak (1529) 2008-07-18 - 2008-07-23
These photos are from 2008 beluga whale aerial survey. Our flights are always 400-700m altitude. I shoot through an open window.
Unfortunately, usually I can't tell much about the places on my photos, because we only fly above them, never land there. My job is to photograph belugas, and all my landscape shots are "by-product": I take them quickly when we fly over land between the survey tracks. The tracks are parallel, and 15-30km apart from each other.
There are more aerial photos from 2005, 2006 surveys in the White and Okhotsk Seas as well as in Alaska that I posted earlier last year. (5 photos)
Land of the Tsars by Mathieu Saint Cyr (1174) 2005-08-15 - 2005-08-26
Moscow is host to the MAKS Aeronautical Airshow. I am sent over there to represent my company at the legendary Zhukovsky airport, the former ultra-secret aeronautical development, once one the most feared military facility in the West.
I never thought growing up that I would once walk on Red Square, where I saw tanks preceding ballistic missiles parading in black and white footage on TV. (7 photos)
1981/08 Soci, Suchumi by Achim Fried (43763) 1981-08-15 - 1981-08-30
extract from my diary (15-30th Aug. 1981):
After a 26 hour from Frankfurt via Kiew we arrived at the airport of Adler near Sochi.
Sochi is a town about a length of 145km along the coast with a lot of hospitals and clinic.
Visit of the Mount Achun, 663m, beautiful view along the coast line.
Strolling in the Park of Life, where Juri Gagarin has plant a Mangolia tree
Helicopter flight to the tea farms near Dragony, drinking tea from a Samuwar, eating Ananas-cucumber Jam.
Boat trip to Suchumi (today Georgia ) visting a monkey zoo. (4 photos)
Vyborg Russia by David Decker (14) 2004-05-10 - 2004-05-10
In order to gain a different perspective of northern Russia I travel the 100 miles by train to a small town north of St. Petersburg called Vuburg. The town sits just off the Gulf Of Finland about 20 miles east of the Finish border. The town was part of a section of Finland captured by the former Soviet Union during the second world war. The make-up of the landscape is much different than that of St Petersburg, the land is rocking and have a Finish feel to it. Take a look at my pictures and you will see what I mean. (2 photos)
