Except in rainy equatorial zone, ponds ecosystems are highly seasonal. In arid areas, ponds are often drained during the dry season (summer in general). In colder areas, they are frozen until several months each year. They are home to various types of plants rooted on the bottom, on the banks or floating in open water. Often they are plants that have an important need light. It is the habitat of many amphibians, insects, mollusks, small fish and birds. Some live there sometimes all year, sometimes a few months (adult newts or their larvae), or did that come to lay their eggs (salamander), or to dampen the deposit before the tadpoles (alyte). Many invertebrates only live in the ponds. Some are active only at night. Some pools may harbour endemic.
