Photographer's Note

This picture was taken in South-western Bolivia, just next to the Chilean Border. The place is called Laguna Verde, and it is a high altitute lake (4500 meters a.s.l.) in a harsh desert landscape surrounded by snowcapped volcanos. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Extremely cold and windy, I remember I felt that Nature was really dictating the rules there.

The lake, which is separated by another lake called Laguna Blanca by a narrow stretch of sand, takes its name by the presence of minerals in the water, which can give the surface a bright green color.
Actually the color depends on the ripples made by the wind, which reflect the light in a special way, and can change very much with the sunlight.
As part of the lake was also covered by a thin layer of ice, (temperature i the night drops well below 0 degrees Celsius) you see here how different tones of green and blue were present together.
The land around is brown with reddish tones.
The Licancabur volcano, about 6000 meters, stands as a guardian next to the lake.
The whole place is really extreme in all senses, and it is not easy to get this sensations from the photographs.
Here I wanted to play with the patterns of colors of the lake and the mountains.
If you are interested you can have a look to the several pictures of this area here on TE (many authors have published astonishing pictures) to better understand the geography of this place.

Scanned from a Velvia 50 color slide, and taken with a Nikon F70 with 28-70 Nikkor Zoom
