Photographer’s Note
I came to notice that this is my #700th post at TE and had the idea to use a photo from the same day and place as my first post; A little valley, Hedalen, along E16 north of Oslo.
My first post in sep 2003 was a detail from the house used by the local priest (..and my first critic to recieve was from my friend DIDI (Said) whom I later on have met two times for small photosessions down in South of France).
Also later in the year I used another photo displaying the whole building.
Today I present the old Hedalen Stave Church of the place - one of the smaller ones, but with an interesting history/legend:
There is a legend about the church; during the Black Death in the middle of the 14th century Hedalen was depopulated, and the valley became a wilderness. A hunter one day shot an arrow after a bird, but instead of hitting his prey, it missed and struck the bell. Then, there he found the church, standing in the middle of the dense forest.
As the hunter believed this must be a church for huldra or other supernatural beings, he took his flint and steel and threw it over the church. This was something believed to seize property from huldra, and so he wanted to prevent the church from disappearing. On the place where the steel fell, a farm was later built which still has the name Ildjarnstad (Firesteel).
In the church the hunter shot a bear which had made its lair by the altar. The skin from this bear still hangs on the wall of the sacristy.
Truth or tale? In a neighbouring valley, Vassfaret, there is a small national park, and this national park is made specifically as a breeding ground for bears, although in recent years the bears prefer to do business in other landscapes.

Hei Jack,
Congratulations on joining us the happy few above #700, welcome !
A nice idea to use this opportunity to get back to the roots, you have here an atrractive subject, it gets quite dramatic here with those grey clouds that have nearly the same color than the tombstones, overall there is a rich palette of greys in this image !
Have a nice day,

Hello Jack
Congratulations on your 700th! I like the partial desaturation, which makes the graveyard & steeple look more like Transylvania than Norway. Needless to say, spooky & atmospheric. Superb sharpness & repetition of the tombstones. Tfs!

Bonjour, mon ami Jack,

Hi Jack. Congrats on your 700th TE anniversary, it is an impressive milestone that few have passed yet. Good idea to go "back to the roots" with this one, and a nice post-work to accentuate the mood provided by the cloudy cover above the church and quiet graveyard. This is a fine example of where a centered framing works ideally, and I quite like the photo. I appreciate your contributions to TE, and I am sure that the Rotterdam meeting was not the last time that we saw each other and got the chance to shoot some photos together.

Hi, Jack. You're a real pillar of TE. 700 pictures, added to your more than 10,000 critiques, that's a milestone. Congratulations on that.
I like the composition very much here with the tombstones that lead us in a kind of triangle to the church. The only part of green is in the churchyard and I think it provides excellent contrast with the rest of the picture. The sky is very dramatic and allows the church spire to stand out very well against it.
I've got a question here: how much of the picture is desaturated?

Hy Jack
Nice drama above, and silent ground...
As I'm living on the Adriatic coast, with mild temperatures in winter, with the snow every 20 years, I'm afascinated by those very much leaning roofs, mostly covered on this kind of fish skin(sorry for my english), that you show perfectly here...

Bonjour Jack,

Hello Jack
Congratulations on your 700th post.
Really beautiful, the environment is quite haunting with this menacing sky. Excellent contrast, nice greyish tones. While I understand the use of the leaves as a framing tool, however I think that without them it would look very interesting too.

Hello . Jack .
Very interesting photo . My eye can hardly tell me if it is in colours all over or if it is both coloured and black and white .
Interesting !
I was really fascinated by the tale !

Very spectacular stavkirke which stands out so well against the dramatic cloudy sky. I like the idea of the leaves making a border although I would have just separated the top of the spire from the leaf.
