Photographer’s Note
The golden age, it was not supposed to be like that...
The photo was taken in a house for older people, who were living on the street. The house is run by Vyuiroli - a Christian organization, founded by mr Rajkumar in 1999, who still takes care of it.
Vuyiroli means "Light of Life" and their main activity is rescuing the dying and the elderly from the streets, giving them a new home and a chance to live their last years in peace and die among people loving them.
this is my last week in India, next Monday night I am flying back to the UK. I have been working on 3 projects here in Chennai, that took all my energy, lots of meetings, delays, waiting... I have completely lost an inspiration and ideas for street photography. Tomorrow I am leaving Chennai, going to Tiruvanamalai, Pondicherry and Mamallapuram, I hope to do some travel photography during this last week.

No, its not suppose to be tlike that but life is hard for many.........
Her expression says it all, downcast, faraway eyes.
Maceij, you have composed this well the three eldery figures, spaced apart, the DOF is spendid.
best wishes to you for 2006 and keep shooting!

Hi Maciek,
I left you a message on PBase. You cant quit photography when you come up with such strong and evocative images. You captured the whole situation in her face while showing us only a hint of her world by employing that powerful bokeh. Keep shooting, no matter what slump you find yourself in.

A tired look, or no concerning feeling, I see a bit sad atmosphere in the photo. Is it because I first read your note or I just sense it from the begining. "light of life" sounds defenitely delighted and warm welcoming feeling, but a place like it sometimes don't seem to offer a light for people. I won't say much about it because I don't know well about the place you were in. I just hope the places like it will offer more chance to these people to retrieve their lives and more chance to enjoy their lives... really meaningfull composition.

Bonjour Maciej,
Superbe photo,excellent travail.
Amicalement.

If you lost inspiration ideas for street photography you sure found another source of inspiration equalily breathtaking. Yes, it's sad... this particular subject touch me really deep. You are a gifted man, and i'm not talking about your technical skills, i'm talking about your heart!
Keep sharing with us your passion, wheter in the street, in the orfanage or inside an elderly house!

Coś niesamowitego jest w tym spojrzeniu i wyrazie twarzy. Doskonale umieściłeś tą postać w kadrze, podczas gdy możemy jakby poprzez mgłę zobaczyć co dzieje sie na planie drugim.
Rewelacja.
Pozdrawiam, Marek.

It's a beautiful shot. The lighting is great and nice sharpness on the woman. I personally think you are makeing your DOF a little too shallow. There are details I would like to see in the background more. Maybe not 100% sharp but not quite so blurry. That is just my personal taste though. Great photo. JP

what makes this shot impressive to me is the back ground and the lying person, as well as the determined or sad face of this woman. it is a very sensible portrait IMO!
did you travel for business or just for pleasure and photography?
happy new year to you maciek and enjoy your last week in india!

Hi Maciej.
Encore une image très forte et poignante.
Le regard vide et les yeux brillants de cette femme, ces 2 personnes dans la profondeur flouttée....très touchant comme photo.
En plus de la belle composition, la qualité est remarcable et l'ouverture est parfaite.
Excellente prise.
Je te souhaite une très bonne année 2006.

Hello Maciek, this is wonderful, technically spoken it’s a beautiful composition, but what you captured is such a sad and tired expression. It shouldn’t be like that at the end of your life.
I’m glad for you that you could do some projects, and I just saw in the forum that you have a couple of pictures published again. Congratulations with that!

Maciej, I am always astonished at how you manage to get such candid expressions. This one is very moving, but mysterious as well. I am not sure if I can tell what she's thinking, but I wish that I could. I think that you would have to be her to really understand. The lighting here is excellent too.

Hi Maciek,
I'm breathless. So many sorrows from her looks. We can guess sad stories and drama for the other characters (in the background) from this elder lady.

"2006.01.01 - Hapy New Year. Still in Chennai, completely frustrated. I don't think I will go to India ever again. Unless a miracle happens. I am completely out of ideas, I am unable to take photos anymore, no joy at all, all people annoy me, it seems like everybody is watching me, the camera draws so much attention here."
haha don't get bugged but these are really funny statements..
you know.. i'm sure you've got some great photographs, but because of the outrageous number of photographs and naturally a large number being not upto the mark, they're hidden..
take it easy.. be patient and spend time at a place and i'm sure you'll be more satisfied with what you do..
also maciej.. i think a photographer will be able to get better work if he/she has some sort of an objective or vision or something like that.. for example.. when claude came here in 2004 to work on his book he was getting really good photographs.. not that his other work is not good.. but there seemed to be some sort of a vision in his work.. it's quite natural to feel that you're not getting anything.. happens to me lots of time..
now coming to this photograph.. you have loads of emotions here.. HOWEVER i totally hate the depth of field here.. infact i feel that these days you're a poor exponent of the depth of field..
fine you've got a bokeh here.. bokehs are nice.. but there are lots of times when a deeper depth of field can bring out the context more clearly like in this case.. even the background could have expressed a part of her life (context) but you've muddled it up..
you seem to be shooting at a low depth of field very often.. but very rarely getting meaningful bokehs.. photographs like the one of the horse and the temple scream for deep depth of fields..
try and experiment with the depth of field as well.. once you start using the depth of field more appropriately your photographs will get stronger..
take care :)
p.s. i'm being hard on you on purpose.. lemme know if you want me to take it easy..
p.p.s. actually i had written a much longer critique a few days ago.. but my connection's not working well.. so it wasn't getting posted and ultimately i lost it..

Hi Maciej
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful portrait. Great use of the DOF and superb expression on the woman's face, we can see a lot of things through her eyes... I simply love it. Great job.

czesc Maciek,
Doskonale, przemyslane zdjecie. Pozdrawiam. maki

Hi Maciej,
nice picture, Her expression is sad and gives alot of thought, and the blurred background is nice. I also like the colors of her sari, and the picture is sharp. Thanks for sharing.

This is the best picture I have seen from you, from your last trips, as posted on galleries, Maciej. You used everything that you knew about photography to let this moment, this scene, its humanity speak for itself. You were truly here simply a witness and a medium, and receded behind the image to convey the quiet desperation of these forlorn people, and for this, you and us are rewarded with a profund and unforgettable testimony of desolation and loneliness.
PS: I read the exchange with SOHRAB. Well, isn't it food for thought that in a period when you felt "less photographic" you came with this picture? Photography is a mean, not a goal.
