Photographer’s Note
Satellite Photo
This photo was taken on the Wall Street very close to the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange). In the background you can see a church and the white building on the left side of this street before the church is that of the NYSE. Please see WS for the view of the NYSE from the Broad street.
I like this photo as it has a Marlboro sign, US flag (on garbage can, pointed out by PLD_Images), and Starbucks coffee shop, all of them an important signs of US culture. I like the ease with which this guy seem to be headed straight for the smoke (It is Steam, pointed out by Wes). Many people were walking through this thing instead of taking a longer detour, very typical of the fast paced New Yorkers.
Some Quick Facts about NYSE from the Wikipedia.org:
1. NYSE is home to 2,800 companies valued at nearly $20 trillion in global market capitalization.
2. The exchange installed its first ticker in 1867 and telephones were first seen in the exchange in 1878. The NYSE first got electric lights in 1883.
3. The frequently seen electronic display boards mounted on the walls of the exchange were first installed in 1966, along with radio pagers.
4. A highly technical wireless data system increasing the speed in which trades were executed was introduced in 1996. This allows for trading to be done with hand-held laptop-like computers carried by the floor traders. Floor traders were very helpful in this.

Hi Sarju!
How are you?
Good to see another one of your excellent photos. This is a great street scene with lots of interesting details - the American and Irish flags, the woman (what is she doing?), the church squeezed in between the scyscrapers - all putting extra spice on the main scene of the determined-looking guy walking past the smoke as if he didn't even notice it. The whole photo is like a theater scene. It invites the observer to all kinds of interpretations. Very interesting and good work!
Thanks Sarju and have a nice day!

Hi Sarju,
What I really like about this composition are all the little things which denote American and particularly New York City culture, some of which are stated in your note - the flag, the fast pace, the nonchalant but all business pace, the Marlboro sign - but also the multicultural dimension, with the other flag visible in the distance. As for the people walking right through the smoke, I would say that denotes an attitude of nothing being too much for these residents to tackle. They are unfazed. A well captured slice of life, Sarju.

Hi Sarju, I saw quite a few movies about NYC have those winter scenes with steam come out from the ground. I have never tried to visit NYC in cold days. I guess that would be the only thing I'd like to see in a winter days in NYC. This picture well showed the steam scene.
A nice shot and a very informative note. Thanks for sharing.

This is a very good shot with that nasty white smoke coming out of the sewage system.
Great contrast between those detritus and the neighbor buildings where billions of green beans $$$ changed hands daily on the NYSE.

P.S. I placed this one under Pollution's theme.

Funny how the icons you mention are the only splash of colour in the otherwise drab street. It's the steam more than anything that screams NEW YORK to me. Very good catch of daily life here Sarju.

Hi Sarju,
Your picture brings me all sorts of questions. What is the stuff on the floor, in the bottom right corner? At first, I thought it was some sheets and pillows... What is that steam coming from the sewer? Is that "normal" in NY? Why the street is blocked? Ok, stop the questions now (you don't have to answer!) and talk about the picture. In fact, I don't have much to say. I think it is an informative one, with all those US symbols as you mentionned. Light is well managed, sharpness is perfect. I especially like the smoke/steam/whatever and also the stuff on the ground... Thank you!

Hello Sarju
So typical of NY as I recall it to be from my previous stay here.Hectic, running, noisy and filthy.
Not a place where I want to live, meaning a big city anywhere in the world.
The church in the distance, squezed by the building saves the photo.
Typical NY slice of life.

Hey Sarju. Yes this does scream America doesn't it? At first I was wishing the stuff wasn't on the ground in the foreground but on the other hand I like the grittiness of the scene, warts and all. The man and steam add some interesting dynamics. Super catch Sarju!

Hi Sarju, I like the steam coming out from the ground. The church behind is nicely captured between buildings.

Hi Sarju,
I wonder how were you leaned down on the floor to make this shot... Good POV, with wonderful details, as you mentioned - I really like to see that church in the background and that guy in a hurry going to the smoke. Another shot with the right atmosphere of the big apple. Good work!

Hi Sarju,
A great shot taken from a position close to the street. Wonderful composition that is full of life. No doubt it is taken i New City but it is not what you expect it to look like in wall street. A really great job!
Cheers,

Ciao Sarju
This is a very clever composition you share with us. Not only have to included the big household names, but you have also represented the contrast in architecture with the church and also the huge Irish community.
Like very much the steam, it just wouldn't be a typical NYC street image without it.
Bravo
First 2 attempts with Dahi were errmmm, lets say unsuccessful, but this time it will be correct.. I'll let you know how I'm getting on. I ended up buying a thermometer, seems I have a high resistance to pain. ; )

Hi Sarju
I like the perspective you have here. The composition is very rich with a lot of symbols of NY, The smoke, the church, the flag, the marlboro ...
Nice work !

Hi Sarju,
Great again, great street image.
the blurred walking person, the smoke and the pants that no one seem to care about.

Sarju your photo is an intimate glimpse of life on the streets. Very good capture including the man in motion on a piece of plywood etc as in the scene. Quality work Sarju! Sorry for the no points critique!

Oh yeh, now I see it too; American flag on a garbage can (thanx PLD for pointing it out). Otherwise I also see an Irish flag and a church which architecture you wouldn't directly expect there and doesn't really fit in next to the skyscrapers (but I prefer this architecture). The steam does give a dynamic effect here. Interesting composition with lots of interesting items in it. I have the impression you know a lot about the nyse. lol

A nice catch of this urban landscape. The scene really depicts US culture and it crass materialism. The church in the distance is a good contrast to the modern architecture and the steam is a great extra touch. good stuff

A typical view on NY : the perspective, the gothic architecture, the flag, the vapour, the ambience...
Interesting compo.

Hi Sarju
I like the motion blur here, the steam, the converging perspective to the church on the side (you missed just the top), unusual good daily life shot seeing the works going on with these typical US signs on the side, a clear shot with low POV, well done.

Hi Sarju,
A casual steet scene that gains all its dimension reading the note when you know it's taken it Wall street the temple of the high fiannce and economic power then the contrast between this power and the somewhat decayed aspect of this street view becomes striking !
Have a nice week end,
Jean-Yves

Hello Sarju, This is very New York! With the smoke coming out of the manholes, the dumpsters in the streets, but I didn't imagine Wall Street this way lol !
Very well done, very big city life scene. Your low pov is very well chosen to my opinion.
This guy crossing the street must me looking at his cell phone as everybody does in the cities.
Great work! That's where you've been hiding in november: in New-York :D
I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! And all the very best in 2006.
P.s. I read your intro and thank you very much for putting me as one of your favourites.
Hugs, Yan :)
