Street colors from Cartagena, northen Colombia facing the carribean sea. This photo is from the amazing old colonial city, a world herritage site. The architetural beauty of this place is stunning, everywhere you look are vivid colored houses with great personal details.

The city was founded 1533 by don Pedro de Heredia and rapidly became one of the most important Spanish settlements in the new world. It was here most of the african slaves arrived and sent further away across the continent. This was also the most important port for the Spanish treasure fleet and became a popular target for pirates and privateers. The city was sacked 1580 by a huge pirate attack cooridinated by Sir Francis Drake. After the defeat they began the construction of a mighty impressive fort to defend all the treasures waiting transportation to europe.

All the riches accumulated here and all the rich people living here led to a city center litterary packed with colonial mansions, artistic buildings and many churches.
