Salinas Grandes - Hard labour in the salt pans

Many visitors of León make an excursion to the popular beach resort Las Peñitas.
I didn’t go to Las Peñitas. So I cannot judge whether a visit is worthwhile or not.
But I did visit another place on the Pacific Coast: Salinas Grandes.

It’s is a very small fishing and salt-mining village in a much less-visited part of the Pacific Coast and that only about an hour from León.
I couldn’t find a bus that went there but have been able to agree on a good price with a taxi driver to take me there for the day. Yes, the prices in Nicaragua make this possible.

The beach of soft gray volcanic sand stretches into several kilometers and huge waves could attract surfers but there were none. That day there was no one except of the residents.

Still a lot more interesting for me were the salt pans just outside the village.
Many of the men in the village work there. They earn just a small wage for very hard labour ...
