Photographer's Note

An exquisitely carved wooden statue of Christ at the foot of the 'hill'. It's more a small mound than a hill. It is estimated that there are over 100,000 crosses at this pilgrimage site 12 km north of Šiauliai. The Soviets, who occupied Lithuania 1944–1990, attempted to destroy the site and it was bulldozed at least 3 times, but Lithuanians were persistent and kept bringing more and more crosses to the site.
