The belfry and city hall from Sluis

A belfry is a typical Flemish building (but Dutch territory) and is an expression of the wealth and independence of a city. Sluis reached a large bloom shortly after its foundation, so that the construction of a stately shiphouse and belfry could not be left out. A nice remark is that Sluis is the only belfry of the Netherlands. The ornate tower is therefore the mark of the city. In addition, the most famous Sluizenaar lives in the tower: "Jantje van Sluis".
With the construction of the current city hall annex belfry was started in 1386, replacing an older shiphouse. Various clocks were hung in the tower, including an emergency clock that could be heard at risk. In 1420 the town hall was still expanded, and so Sluis could show off a building worthy to receive great heads such as the Duke of Burgundy and English Kings. Filips de Goede and Isabella married (1430) and Karel de Stoute married Margareta van York (1468).
