Photographer's Note

In the Northern Dales, Moles are often called "Mowlies" and viewed as a pest rather than the endearing "Gentleman in Black" image we may have. They are hunted as a pest and it has long been the rather strange custom to string them up to deter the arrival of other moles. I'm not sure whether it works but it does generate a pungent odour of decay which might put you off from moving into the neighbourhood!

This was just one of four strings of moles bordering a single field in Teesdale. You may note not a single molehill to be seen in the field behind!

Converted to Black and White and some darkening of the sky done in PP.
