[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
Photo taken in the Old Quebec with a view on the St-Lawrence River and a part of the Quebec port.
It was late in the afternoon on a beautiful winter day in Quebec City.

The Port of Québec is the fastest growing port on the St. Lawrence and is the port linking the industrial and agricultural heartland of North America with the rest of the world.

Québec’s vocation as a trading port dates back several centuries. Even before the arrival of the French, the Aboriginal peoples used this site for trading. When Jacques Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River in 1535, he spent some time at Québec. While it served as a place where the Amerindian peoples living upstream and downstream could meet and trade, this natural harbour and estuary would later become the pivot between the Old World and the New World.

Almost half a century was to pass before this part of the Americas, of which Cartier had taken possession in the name of the King of France, could be called a French colony. The city of Québec was founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain and its growth kept pace with that of the colony. Under the French regime, the commercial role of the Port of Québec was predominant as a result of the furs that accounted for some 60 per cent of the value of exports to France.

More recently,
In 1999, the Quebec Port Corporation became the Quebec Port Authority (QPA). With this legislative change, the Port of Québec acquired a new framework that gave it greater freedom of action in the management of the Port’s infrastructures as well as increased independence. The last few years have been extremely important for the Port Authority and the whole maritime community. In 2002, the QPA opened its cruise ship terminal in the Pointe-à-Carcy sector. This new facility will allow the area to benefit fully from the major economic spin-offs linked to visits paid by cruise passengers to the tourism sites of the City. In 2003, the Port of Québec set a new record when it handled more than 20.2 million tonnes of cargo!

Bonjour Pierre

A 'fire & ice' shot, of contrasting warm tones of the setting sun, & cold tones of the snow covered rooves & frozen river. Tres bon!

Excelent colors. This view is impressive and interesting.
Horizon and sky color are great. Good notes too. Well captured.

Indeed a very curious warm red light in this snowy view, the blue cold has lost it from the red sun.
Very well spotted.

Hi Pierre, a very great note of the oldest port of Canada, the winter day with a little snow on the roofs, the low red sun jets, the tower in the middle I can see the stairs toward above. A very nice winter picture!

Salut Pierre,

Bonjour Pierre! It is very interesting how only the ship at right is in focus. I'm tempted to think that more elements should be in focus, but that would take some experimentation. The composition is effective here as we peer from behind these buildings to the lovely colors beyond. The building itself has pretty colors, too!

very ncie work here, I like the colour, very dramatic and poserful, great framing too

Bien amicalement.
Philippe

Hi Pierre,
Nice shot of the port! The colours are very successful with this shaving lighting. The subject is well centred.
Thanks for sharing.

Quite special atmosphere created by the light you captured, Pierre, and definitely very cold-looking scenery I have to say. Nice composing too with the ship making an appearance on the St Lawrence behind the foreground buildings. Lovely colors, too, well done.

For a winter picture the colours are unusual. Such a nice warm red glow on the river of ice, which usually looks so blue-white in winter time. I like seeing the buildings in the foreground as they give such a depth when you look out over the river to the mountains beyond. Great composition.

Nice to watch the golden colours from the low sun, even at 17:15 - thanks Pierre, for showing us harbour life and telling us the story of that old port.

Very good note. It's funny we both are important parts of the St. Lawrence Seaway right now. And both in sunset. The tones are beautiful here, especially over the ice field. It's good lines, also. It just seems a bit soft on focus and low on contrast. Perhaps a little work there would boost the strength of it to pop out more. It's from a good perch, though, showing the mechanical structure rising over the older buildings and then the river flowing out and through the hills beyond. And then the lonely freighter making its way along. Nicely done.

A while ago with a freighter post I saw I thought it would be interesting to see one freighter at several points along the seaway here on TE. From Duluth all the way to Quebec City. I have imagined being on one of these ships passing all these landscapes and sights. That would be a neat way to get an idea of a voyage.

Hi Pierre, I like the warm tones and light of this snow covered harbour scene very much. In combination with the departing freighter is has the character of enfolding story. There's a slight lack of definition in y'r pic, but this doesn't bother me here. Nicely photographed & thanx for the very informative note.

Great colors and good contrast between them.Interesting view,I like the point of view and the prespective.I like the reflections the sun in the water.Good DOF and framing.Good note.Well done!

I don't know how I missed it,Pierre,...but now I'm glad to see this beautiful cold afternoon which is warm:)
very well captured and with this fine POV very well composed,...amazing colors in the sky you captured,I like the shot and thanks a lot for your great note,You did excellent,Pierre.

A very beautiful shot, Pierre. The late afternoon sunlight enriches the colours perfectly. Great contrast between the cold colours below and the warm colours on top. Well framed and captured. Excellent note.
