Photographer’s Note
Title says it all I think...
Simon flydragon knows more about Palong people than I do. I for myself just stopped into a Palong village away from Chiang Mai for a few hours.
You may find that very laconic or cynical but I have often commented that I'm not very fond of that kind of pictures... I'm then posting that just for photo sake, as my interest is mostly about its composition and the way i've printed it through -again- lith print.
For who do not like grain or harsh rendition, I must say I have a larger print that I can't scan but it's almost like a drawing made from pencil dots on Canson paper.
Harsher and grainier, That's how I like it better ;D !

This is a great picture. Very similars to ones i see in NG. Your choice of B/W as the color is excelent. Also I like the framming, it doent's show too much and keeps the center of interest (mum) focused to the viewer. Thanks for sharing

Belle photo.... encore.

beautiful portrait of a mother with her child, simple picture, but effective. her hand on the head, tight compo, B&W and a lot of contrast and grain - all those things are nice. one thing here - her nose is in the sun while the rest of the face is in shadow - small flaw. nice work

hehehe good shot, specially what I like the most is the BIG boy in her arms...
nice subjects at first, the tight cropping works for me...I wonder if you changed the tones...at my monitor I see kind of sephia...
Graininess is also welcome.

Hi Luko. Interesting that your notes mention Simon, as I thought that would be the photographer when I opened the thumbnail. Unfortunately, I do find the grain here a little too much, although I would imagine the actual print looks much better (larger and a more complete tonal range than on my monitor). Composition is very nice, although maybe not as complex as some of your other shots. Her face has a kind of strange tone to it. Looks as though it has been dodged in Photoshop with a not too delicate touch. Maybe that is just the character of the lith print and Ilford? Good shot Luko, although not right up there with your best.

Luko, you may agree or not, and although I also don’t like this kind of portraits, but here I see a strong spiritual expression. No, it is not from automatic holiness of motherhood. Instead of abstract characteristics I would try to list the attributes of the specifics of this one: strong man’s arm + rough but tender hands and face and nose (really inapproprietly shining, but also adding a ridiculous touch - a bit of spice) together with half-hidden, but obviously very kind, slightly timid glimpse of eyes and the same smile on the lips, humble and proud at the same time, then (closer to photo qualities) the kid’s face turned in an opposite angle to the mother’s, also with an "opposite" expression of militant anger and resolution, and all these (and some more) contrasting components in a perfect harmony with the technique chosen - B&W, rough (harsh) grain, which seems to be finer and softer on the kid’s head... It is a good picture not only from the technical side. The note is useful as a provocation.

hello Luko
tres belle photo
jamais vue
a link for Palong hilltribe

I'm not sure what you're trying to convey here (from your note it's the technique and composition, which, both from observation and your explanations in your various examples of the technique-- I cannot really fault).
What I can perhaps suggest is maybe lith printing wasn't the most effective technique employed to suggest the obvious message of tenderness/bond since it's quite a harsh, uncompromising 'spotlight' kind of rendition (though the baby's own expression contradicts this notion anyway). Much of this also is probably due to the lighting-- seems to be a bright, daytime sunlight which the printing has exaggerated.
Therefore I don't know what to make of the picture as a whole-- both message and presentation. Itemised, I cannot criticise the technique nor composition.

Yep, the title says it. As far as your discussion about the posting, well it's a great photo, and the treatment (high contrast lith) seems perfect for the subject. I can't see anything cynical about posting this.

I'm amazed with how you made this photo look very old, Luko! Great use of B&W, and great portrait of a mother and child. I think your grain style is just right for this pic! It's an excellent post! Good work!

I think is the grain that turns this photo in a winner. You´re work here in TE is really something. I really feel that i´m learning about the world with your images.
