During the last ice age, a giant glacier casually worked its way southward, blocking off a narrow valley and arresting the flow of the Clark Fork River with a formidable blockade of ice. This event would foreshadow one of the most cataclysmic episodes in the past 10,000 years. As the chilling waters of the river began to buildup behind the icy barrier, a lake, only comparible to the Great Lakes of the American Midwest was born in what is now Western Montana. Eventually, the dam could no longer hold back the frigid waters, and as it disintigrated, an incomprehensible wall of water was released on what is now the scarred landscape of Central Washington. The turbulent waters of Glacial Lake Missoula took no mercy on the landscape, during their frantic surge to the sea.
