Photographer's Note

Last Saturday I visited an antiques street market in Sao Paulo’s nice Villa Madalena district (you can find another note here). It was a very hot and somehow cloudy afternoon, without good light. Anyway I took some photos which I hope to post the next days.

I decided to walk back home and suddenly appeared in a street with lots of graffiti and started photographing. At that time of the afternoon the sun had appeared and was close to setting, so the light was very soft.

A boy appeared from one of the houses and asked if I could take his photo. I got a little surprised since I never considered myself anything more than a snap-shooter amateur who takes photos just for pleasure… but said yes.

He then said… but you must give a copy!… I agreed again and promised him that he would get his copy.

Finally, I took the photo… got back home, processed the image, copied it into a CD which I took to one of those ‘on-the-hour’ printing services…

Yesterday morning, I walked back to his home, knocked the door… he appeared with his father, and I presented to them the printed photo and CD. This time the surprise was theirs… but well, it had been a promise… (And by good account also a good example of the openness that I have found in the Brazilian people).

In the photo he appears smiling because he found that my Portuguese accent is funny!
