RAWENE

I love the Hokianga Harbour, and Hokianga's most picturesque port town is Rawene. “Ra” means sun and “wene” means setting.

RAWENE is a small township on the Hokianga Harbour in the Far North of Aotearoa/NewZealand.

It is the central point of the Hokianga district with more shops than any other township, I think it might have about 12 shops! And it is also the site of the Hokianga Hospital.

Rawene is one of those delightful surprises that you are sometimes lucky enough to stumble across in your travels. After working your way up the Kauri Coast and into the Hokianga, you take the turnoff to catch the ferry at Rawene and find yourself in another world.

Transport from the north side of the Hokianga Harbour is by means of a vehicular ferry which runs an hourly service, or more frequently in summer according to demand.

It is reached from State Highway 12 by a 6 km spur road, and is 40 km from Kaikohe and 108 km from Dargaville through the wonderful Waipoua Forest.

This is a very well-known corner in Rawene – it doesn’t have many!! Nowadays it is very prettily painted. But at one stage way back in history, the lower part of the building here was also a lawyer’s office, with a future Prime Minister in attendance. Upstairs is now a training establishment, with a hairdresser’s below.
