Photographer's Note

Shortly after dawn we cruising the huge and magnificent Yellow Waters area in Kakadu national Park with its unbelievable number and variety of bird life. We spotted a good sized crocodile swimming towards a group of whistling ducks. They didn’t panic, just kept a close watch on him. I was at the ready waiting the croc to strike but for some reason he gave up just after I took this photo. Crocodiles have only a fairly short strike range but they move extremely fast over that short distance. The water was too shallow for him to go under water for an attack and maybe it was too deep to launch an above water attack. Apparently whistling ducks aren’t overly keen on swimming in deeper water – I can understand why!
