Artwork statement: Venus Rising at Kangaroo Point Park is a slender torpedo shaped tower that was created by internationally acclaimed artist, Wolfgang Buttress. The structure stands 23 metres high and at night is illuminated providing the Brisbane skyline with a unique and visible marker. As the winning sculpture of an Arts Queensland public ballot, Venus Rising attracted almost 60% of the 4500 votes placed and was selected as the iconic landmark of choice for Brisbane’s newest riverside park. Venus Rising is a sculpture more concerned with weightlessness than mass, spiralling upwards with a delicate, elegant and almost ethereal energy.
Floating arrangements of circles within the design create a sense of bubbles and movement rising up through water. When standing inside the sculpture, viewers look up into an unusual spiral formation based on the intersection of central spines of the nautilus shell. The spiral refers to fundamental principles of geometry and symbolism about transition, growth and evolution itself.
