Photographer's Note

This past weekend my kids and I rented a movie called "The Island" and much to my surprise a couple of scenes in the movie were filmed right here at this building, the Thomas Cook building in the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada.

Rhyolite was founded in 1904 shortly after gold was discovered in the nearby hills. By 1907 the population had grown to about 10,000 but due to so-called "financial panic" the population began to shrink dramatically and by 1910 only a few hundred people remained in town and in 1916 Rhyolite's last resident packed up and left.

A common flashlight was used to "paint" the building in this photo.
