Photographer's Note

One block of Broadway has recently been transformed into a giant, winter playground. There are twelve large see-saws that emit different lights and music when someone rides them.

This interactive installation is called Impulse, and it is located in the Garment District between 37th and 38th Streets, right in the middle of Broadway. It’s part of a year-round public art program that displays various projects on the same block, giving the space back to pedestrians to enjoy.

The effect of the illumination is more dramatic at night, but I was only able to pass by during the afternoon. Everyone who found these giant see-saws, and decided to take a ride, had big smiles on their faces while they enjoyed this unexpected find.

It was fun finding something you wouldn’t normally see, in one of the busiest spots in New York City. This block is right in the middle of both Herald Square and Times Square. No, I didn’t ride the see-saws myself; I only took photos. :-)
