St. Nicholas Basilica
It stands impressive in the Old Town of Bari, it is not a newly built church but a temple built on the area of the cateful residence (the Byzantine Greek governor of Southern Italy between 968 and 1071) and therefore with substantial reuse of material from the previous building.
On May 9, 1087, the relics of St. Nicholas of Mira arrived in Bari. On July 8, the Benedictine Abbot Elijah demolished most of the pre-existing palace and some smaller ecclesiastical buildings, thus beginning the majestic construction. To him, therefore, the structure and the beautiful sculptural furnishings (Chair of the Abbot Elia, Portal of the Lions and capitals of the ciborium) are all attributed to him, all finished by his successor, Abbot Eustaz.
