The summer transhumance in the village of Aubrac of the Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac municipality.
In late May, traditionally decorated, leaving their valleys, cattle go to pasture on the PLATEAU OF AUBRAC to over 1000 meters. During the winter transhumance or reverse transhumance, the animals return to their stables in the valley in mid-October. Outside the traditional festival, the animals are mainly transported by trucks.
It was the 31st transhumance festival, and feast of the Aubrac cattle.
_ The PLATEAU DE L'AUBRAC is a volcanic and granite plateau of 1300 km², located between the Massif-Central and the Grands-Causses. Its altitude ranges from 1000 m to over 1200 m and reaches 1469 m Signal de Mailhebiau. Fauna and flora are exceptional.
SAINT-CHÉLY-D'AUBRAC is a french municipality, located in the department of Aveyron of the Midi-Pyrénées area, populated of 551 Saint-Chélois, distributed on 78,7 km ², that is to say 7 hab./km².
At about 1310 meters on the PLATEAU OF AUBRAC, in the village of Aubrac, the municipality of Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac, we discover the DÔMERIE 12th 15th centuries, which is a former monastery and hospital, there remains the NOTRE-DAME DES PAUVRES church of the 13th 14th 16th centuries.
The dômerie d'Aubrac, welcomed and looked the pilgrims of Compostelle.
The village of Aubrac is crossed by the via Podensis on chemins de Compostelle.
The Via Agrippa linked, among others, Lyon to Aquitaine, via the plateau of Aubrac.
King François Ier, stopped at Aubrac the 20 to 22 July 1533.
With its bright rivers, forests, hills, grassy expanse, its pathes, Aubrac is a paradise for hikers, which can be reconstituted in Aubrac with local specialties, of which aligot and truffade.

cette photo de transhumance est superbe avec ces belles vaches d'Aubrac et l'accompagnement avec les agriculteurs et les gens du village qui font le cortège.

Bonjour Joël,
I remember well your earlier shot of the cattle in this Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac ritual. The close-up of the two lead animals is so effective that I wanted to step out of the way. In the distance one can see the numerous participants, testifying to how seriously the inhabitants take this ritual.

Hi joel,
This is a good pastoral photograph, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle that which cows leave for a plateau with village people. The same customs are seen also in our country. It's interesting in head's decoration of right cow, too. So, it's a good festival/custom being felt season's change, I think.

Hello Joel - I like the old country ways and rural celebrations which hark back to bygone days where people measured life by seasons, harvests, births and deaths. This is wonderful. I have never seen such a sight before, the decorated cow looks fabulous and I see the farmers are wearing traditional berets and neckerchiefs for the occasion. Excellent TE contribution. Hello Joel,
a delightful way to describe this interesting rural custom by bringing the viewer so close to the colourful procession in the mountain. I love the way you've captured the moment with the animals and the shepherds walking uphill while we can also see the distant view and the people following behind. The varied lighting conditions have been dealt with superbly and the colours are delightfuly natural and well defined. Belle scène de montée à l'estive, coup de chapeau aux poignées de paysans qui perpétuent la tradition de la transhumance, malgré les rigueurs qu'elle impose ! Les vaches sont superbes et parées de leurs beaux atours pour ce jour "de fête" ! Belle lumière, très douce, et excellente netteté.

I can honestly say, this must be the first time i've ever seen an animal carrying such a large collection of flowers!

Cette estive est un bon moment pour les habitants de la région et pour les photographes. Les belles Aubrac ne semblent, par contre, pas vraiment enchantées....elles se sentent peut-être ridicules avec le "décor" placé entre leurs cornes -)Maintenant, on sait que la vache n'est pas l'animal le plus expressif au monde!

Salut Joel ,
Très belle capture de cette montée en estive , avec les belles vaches d'Aubrac bien décorées , et les bergers qui les suivent . En Vallée d'Ossau dans le Bréarn , c'est en ce moment . J'y ai assisté , mais n'aimalheureusement pas réussi à prendre de si bons clichés .
Juste un petit défaut en ce qui concerne la composition , les arbres et le bouquet qui sont coupés en haut . mAis c'est un détail , et je suppose qu'il fallait faire vite .

This is a superb pastoral shot depicting the lively rural traditon and you are close enough full of detail which I am sure is nostalgic to you something i may not know but it is meaningful to this picture. These cows are impressively decorated with their big horns but I can feel the mood and so are those participants all this combines to reflect the happy atmosphere. This is an excellent happy picture, Congrats, Cheers!
