Photographer's Note
German archaeologists excavated the site of Babylon in the early 20th century & in 1930 the Ishtar gate and processional lions were reconstructed in Berlin using the original bricks. It's a more professional reconstruction than the amateurish effort at Knossos in Crete. Parts of this collection were sold to 11 other museums around the world including Gothenburg, Istanbul, Paris, Chicago, Newhaven, Detroit, Munich, Toronto, & Boston eg. Shown here is a tile display in the King's palace (Nebuchadnezzar II).
"It was constructed in about 575 BCE by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city. It was part of a grand walled processional way leading into the city. The walls were finished in glazed bricks mostly in blue, with animals and deities in low relief at intervals, these also made up of bricks that are molded and colored differently."
There are auruchs and dragons on some of the processional walls in addition to many lions, which have become extinct in Iraq. An 'auruch' is the ancestor of all modern cattle but became extinct. The last one died in the Jactorow Forest in Poland in 1627 AD. I included just enough of the tourists to give scale and context. I came to the museum primarily to see the ancient gate, less so for other tourists. The Pergamon Museum was still open when I visited but has since partially closed until 2023.

Hello Chris,
It would have been nicer to find this in Iraq, but it felt natural to German archaeologists 100 years ago to steal the bricks and bring them home. It is a magnificent creation getting more lively at the bottom where the heads of tourists mingle in an amusing way with the very naturally depicted lions. You used the rather sparse light in the old museum very well.

Gert

Hello Chris,
I remember seeing information about the excavation in a book but, wow, your coloured photograph shows just how beautiful this processional way was! I am in awe of the skill and and the artistry of these ancient people.
Your photograph is well composed, detailing the wall beautifully and, as you note, using just a snippet of tourist detailing for the sense of scale.
Thanks for sharing this,
Bev :-)

Chris, the photo presents a remarkable work of reconstitution. Ishtar gate is made of beautiful mosaics and friezes. I like the three processional lions walking at the base of the artwork. Fine colors, good image quality, instructive photo note, regards.

Hello dear Chris,
Very nice capture of this famous gate exhibited in the Museum of Berlin, where also many quite interesting objects from Turkey are exhibited.
By the way as you've mentioned two of those lions (at the bottom part) are been exhibited in the Archaelogical Museum of İstanbul.
Both photographycally and informative perfect TE job.

Bonjour Chris,
Tu as bien capturé la concentration des personnes au musée. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de la porte de Ishtar. La lumière rehausse les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

Hi Chris
You captured the colours and patterns of the reconstructed Ishtar gate so well, especially considering the fact that the light in the museum must have been challenging.
The visitors' heads among the lions create an amusing effect.
Best wishes
Kasia
Ps. You asked me how close the car was to the cliff as I took the first photo I posted from Tajikistan. At that point it was quite safe. But as we reached river Panj (that's over 300 km of the journey) the situation changed and it was quite scary at times, especially because the driver was driving as fast as possible.

One of the most famous exhibits at the Museum in Berlin, as far as I know there is a renovation now and you can see it only in the photo, a beautiful shot

Hello Chris,
The deep blue colour of the bricks is fantastic and I like the contrast with the yellow tones a lot. The photo is so sharp and clear, allowing us to see the details very well. I also like the inclusion of the museum visitors.

Hi Chris,
I have passed near this amazing museum but due to limited time I didn't enter.
Now looking at this beautiful exhibition I so regret it!
I really must visit Berlin again with a digital camera this time.
Great capture! I like very much vivid colors and clarity.

Hi Chris
Disappointing to hear that the museum is partially closed as I'm spending a week in Berlin next year. A good photo of one of the many items that the Germans have "liberated" from their source countries. I totally agree with your comments on Knossos - Phaestos was far more rewarding to visit.
cheers
