Just inland from many parts of the Nova Scotia coastline are salt marshes like these. In the 16th and 17th centuries the Acadians, a group of self-sufficient immigrants from northern France, drained these marshes for fertile farmland using a system of drainage gates that would allow water to flow out but not in.
