Calgary Public Library

“A public library is a library that is accessible by the general public and is usually funded from public sources, such as taxes. It is operated by librarians and library paraprofessionals, who are also civil servants.
There are five fundamental characteristics shared by public libraries:
• they are generally supported by taxes (usually local, though any level of government can and may contribute);
• they are governed by a board to serve the public interest;
• they are open to all, and every community member can access the collection;
• they are entirely voluntary in that no one is ever forced to use the services provided; and
• they provide basic services without charge.”
(Rubin, Richard E. Foundations of Library and Information Science (3rd ed). 2010. Neal-Schuman Publishers: New York.)

The Public Libraries are often striking buildings, the proud of a large city. They are one of the appealing buildings of cultural life and show that a city government fulfils its mission in this policy sector.

I want to show in this presentation how different this assignment can be fulfilled.

■ Two years ago I posted the striking building of the Seattle Public Library designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.

■ In my previous presentations I showed the archaic and yet contemporary building of the Vancouver Public Library designed by the architects Moshe Safdie , Richard Archambault and Barry Downs.

■Today three pictures of the beautiful contemporary postmodern Calgary Public Library designed by the American-Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta. (also the architects of the beautiful opera house in Oslo)

Whichever building you like the most, all three are excellent examples of succesful contemporary architecture.
