Photographer's Note

Rob and Lars will probably appreciate this photo :)
I took them here when they visited last summer.

Other TE members may look at this scene and think, what he heck am I looking at???? I purposely wanted to make the scene look and feel gritty, I wanted it to look mechanical, adding in the orange/red bars to match the "W".

What you're seeing is a night shot taken downtown, at the Woodwards Building. Before we get to that, you may already recognize the circular tower in the bg - thats the Harbour Centre which I've posted several times.

Back to Woodwards. Look closely and you'll see that the oversized large "W" is protected, saved, and is now used as decoration. This is the old/original "W" from the original Woodwards building. It was saved and kept in storage somewhere else for several years.

When a brand new Woodwards was constructed a few years ago, they brought out this original "W" and incorporated it in a very artistic and creative way. Personally, I enjoy it and like it very much.

The new Woodwards building has their "W" spinning in the sky a few hundred feet up in the air near by - just as this one did a long time ago.

If and when you ever visit Vancouver, look up while you're walking the streets and i'm sure you'll see a large Red "W" - I think i remember seeing Rob taking a photo of it - thats where this old baby used to be, but now she's grounded.

In the WS are 2 more photos taken during the daytime.

The original Woodwards Department Store building was built in 1903. At that time it was North Americas largest supermarket! It offered, household items, men's and women's fashion, provided cheque cashing services, travel and booking services - it was well known for carrying a large variety of goods that were not available anywhere else at the time.

In 1944 the famous "W" was installed on its rooftop.

Due to large box stores and suburbia, the department store went bankrupt in 1993 and closed.
