Standing on a hill overlooking the solitary column remaining from the temple of Artemis, (one of the former 7 wonders of the world), is the Basilica of St. John. It appears to have used many of the stones and columns from the former Greek temple. There is a stork stretching its wings top left. It has built its nest atop a column. Apparently this ruined cathedral from the 6th century is built over the tomb of John the Apostle.
Although the nearby Ephesus ruined city is just 3.5 km away & is a much bigger tourist attraction, few people bother to visit this ruin in the centre of Selcuk (Pronounced as "sell-chook"). Some people even advise not to visit this site at all, but to head straight to Ephesus. Imho, both are worth a visit. The temple of Artemis, on the other hand, could be skipped. Here is all that is left of it with the Basilica on the hill behind it: https://wjcsydney.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/pict0638.jpg

Can only imagine how the place was in old times, as the ruins now partially restored, Chris.
POV angle well chosen with the side rays and shadows enhanced the outlines of the site. Superb photojob, as always.
Wish you a nice weekend,

It isn't easy to make ancient ruins into a well composed photograph but you have managed it admirably here. The f/g line of pillars makes a perfect lead, stops on the thirds line and creates a wonderful, almost parallel link with the b/g pillars.
The light is strong but very well controlled, giving excellent clarity.
My warm regards,

A saw the thumbnail of this splendid picture next to the thumbnail of your previous post. The first think that stroke me was the same kind of verticals in both scenes and the same effect of the dark shadows. But the architecture is very different of course.
A very attractive image of a very high quality.
Have a good weekend

Il y a de bien belles choses à voir en Turquie mais cela devient de mois en moins tentant d'y aller au niveau de se qui se passe dans sa politique. Je vais me fier sur toi pour que tu nous les partage. Magnifique endroit.

I like this picturesque scene with the ancient ruins. But I think the red bricks look so fresh in comparison with the columns. Good graphic and clever composition, well seen.
Have a great WE!

A beautiful photo of the ruins of this famous place. I like the long shadows of the columns in the foreground in this bright and warm light. The composition is excellent and the sharpness and clarity are superb.
macjake (73063) 2017-03-18 11:37
its probably very common, but what I like doing is looking at these historic temples and trying to imagine how it looked in its prime. Funny to see how the large bird has taken ownership of that tall column. fine lighting, smart angled compo, looks great. fine details in the stone too.
federico (4609) 2017-03-18 13:56

Those storks on top of one of the ancient columns are a wonderful detail of this splendid presentation of Ephesus.
Especially with the spreads wings of one of them.
The picture has excellent clarity, very good depth and it's so nice to see two rows of columns on a different level.
Best regards, Paul
