Photographer's Note
Here are my last three photos from Petra, the ancient city in southern Jordan founded by the Nabataeans in the 5th century BC. A Unesco World Heritage site and voted one of the seven new wonders of the world (a vote undertaken because most of the old wonders no longer exist).
I avoided the best known views for the main photos of my first two uploads, but today I'm all in for classic postcard views. I have several more photos from Petra, but they are all of the workshop kind and nothing for a main upload, so the next time I will move to another part of Jordan.
Today's photo shows the street leading up to two of the most famous graves in Petra. To the left is the so called Palace Tomb, built by the last Nabataean ruler King Rabel II who reigned Petra 70–106 AD, up to the Roman conquest. Next to it is the Corinthian Tomb built during the reign of Malichus II (40–70 AD) to house the remains of his predecessor Aretas IV.
Here is a larger version.
One WS shows the largest building, or rather façade, in Petra. In the other a man is seen riding along a street.
All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Dear Gert,
WS 2 was more in your style, maybe because of the human presence and personally I like it better, its more unique and has a strong atmosphere. However, the main upload is good enough too,it is a fair postcard. Sometimes we have to show them too!
Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hi Gert, another magnificent post with 3 memories of Petra. This time a classic postcard too, showing the monastery in the WS that i remember well because the long and difficult staircase to see it...ehehe...magnificent composition for the main pic with the columns as a special bonus, excellent idea the black and white too,in fact the colors of film aren't the best. Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

these choices for vote are ever distorted. it is the same about who is the better singer or the better song, what is the most beautiful people or town... if you like shows and gambling Vegas is one of 7 wonders. haha.
anyway this is a special place, for sure. I never had seen the ruins from this angle, including columns and many carved buildings ahead.
marvelous view. the last WS is more beautiful, but it is more classic and usual too. I liked the sense of movement of the second WS.
take care

Hi Gert,
The wideness of the area is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the ruins of Petra. The colors are beautiful. Have a nice day.

Hi Gert
You will be pleased to know that I asked Viviane to shift all of the Petra images from Aqaba to Maan, the correct province. That looks like the Great Temple at right and the Queens' tombs in the bg cliffs. Good sharpness and scanning. The camel adds a local Middle Eastern flavour that you do not get in Europe. Tfs!

Hej Gert,

Gert, the vast archeological site contains a monastery carved in the rocky cliff and tombs. Some broken columns testify the ancient city grandeur. The visit should be fascinating, the traveller is immersed in a magical atmosphere. Fine colors, good image quality, instructive photo note, regards.

Hello Gert,
For some reason, this street reminded of the street that leads to the (now silted out) port of Ephesus. In place of the huge amphitheatre, we have a rock facade filled with carved tombs. 👍🏻👍🏻

Hello Gert,
I can imagine that after emerging from the narrow pathway, when it opened up into this, it must have taken your breath away! What remarkably skilled stonemasons they must have been to achieve such beautiful buildings, still withstanding the test of time.
The pillars are nicely placed and must have had a awe inspiring impact when they were complete! They sort of dramatise the passage to the tombs.
I couldn't help wondering about the guy on the camel; to him, this view was probably so normal, so everyday, whilst to us, its breathtaking!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert, an excellent ‘postcard’ from Petra.
I can imagine the excitement as this famous place came into view as you approached the site.
I like the W/s shot of the man on the camel, good timing to capture that one!
Every shot beneath a beautiful blue sky.
A lovely series, thank you.
Kind regards, Jean

Hello Gert,
After all the photos of the access road to Petra, the wonder of the world cannot be missed itself. And that this happens in a classical way seems logical to me. Because of the old kodak colours, the photos have an extra atmosphere of the past.
Another very interesting presentation.
Have a nice day, groet Rob

Hi Gert
I loved this series, it can't be the last post, you haven't posted a photo of the Treasury yet!
Seriously though, I really like the composition here with the mysterious tombs in the distance and the lines of columns in the foreground. The blue sky contrasts with the dun of the landscape and the man with a camel adds life (is it a donkey in the background?). You would be hard-pushed to photograph this place with just one man with a camel these days. Both this and the WS image of the Monastery look pretty match how those places look like today except the street in the main photo is lined with souvenir shops (and one restaurant serving really nice juice where they let me buy a whole lemon I needed so much for my tea and couldn't find anywhere else...).
My favourite is the b&w WS though. It's got a real Lawrence of Arabia feel.
Best wishes
Kasia

Hi Gert
its fun to compare these shots to the most recent ones, and perhaps the site has been 'cleaned up' to some degree or perhaps your shots just have a more rugged feel to them I'm not sure. This is a great perspective. Its an obvious observation, but the carved out exteriors really do mimic the cliffs, camoflauged so well. Its fun trying to visualize how this place looked in its prime. I'll try a google search for the same, I'm sure there's some drawings or something of how this used to look. great shots once again. cheers

Hello Gert,
Those ruins are the most visited site in Jordan, though I never been there despite the relative short driving distance from home.
Fine scan under the blazing desert sun. Besides people - the camel enliven the scene.
My best regards,

Hi Gert.
Fantastic composition with this view of Petra, these three columns in the center manage to mark on one side where the street ran and on the other give greater perspective, leading us towards the vertical walls of the mountain with its temples and excavated tombs, a wonder.
A fantastic photo, with beautiful natural colors, very good lighting and excellent sharpness.
Well done .. I love it.
Enjoy the weekend.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hello Gert, Fantastic quality of this old picture. Maybe the colours are not as I remember them. Beautiful view of the monastery. Have you climbed all these 800 steps?? I didn't because I was with the group and I have heavy rain and hail there and I had to be evacuated by police on camels, so my experience was quite unique (but not good for photos). Judging from the various pictures, Petra is more attractive than Madain Saleh.
I could make the series of all these seven wonders, I have seen them all :).
