Photographer’s Note

This is the famous Siq of Petra. You enter the valley containing the remains of the famous ancient city of Petra through a narrow gorge, about three kilometres long and sometimes only a couple of metres wide.
Petra was established about the 6th century BC by an Arabic tribe called the Nabataeans. For centuries they made fortunes by taxing (or plundering) caravans going across the desert. The Nabataeans ruled until 106 AD, when the city was conquered by the Romans.
The crusaders spent some time in Petra in the 12th century, but after they had left only the local bedouins knew about this treasure for hundreds of years, until a Swiss explorer managed to sneak into the valley in 1812.
It's not easy to take good pictures in the Siq, with its contrasts between light and dark areas. Concentrating on the steep rocks I have deliberately left the ruin just outside overexposed.
