Zebra crossings were first used in the UK in 1949. Blue and yellow strips, and also red and white, were also considered - and the world could have been very different...

The cover of The Beatles' Abbey Road album in the 1960s is probably the world's most famous zebra crossing.

Umbrellas were used by the royalty in ancient Persia and Egypt. In Greece and Rome it was a device of female use only. The collapsible umbrella was invented in ancient China 1700 years ago.

After the invention of the steel-ribbed collapsible umbrella in the 19th century, it has come into general use.
