Umbrellas were used by the royalty in ancient Persia and Egypt. In Greece and Rome it was a device of female use only. The collapsible umbrella was invented in ancient China 1700 years ago.

After the invention of the steel-ribbed collapsible umbrella in the 19th century, it has come into general use.
