Photographer's Note

The pistons from a steam engine about 90 years old. These pistons belong to a capstan in Portsmouth dockyard that was used to steer ships into the docks and also to open the dock gates, (caissons). The engine was converted to air operation in the sixties. The capstan is no longer needed but will be preserved and refurbished.
Cropped and framed.
