Photographer's Note

Good Morning Everyone,

Barnard Castle is a pretty market town and thrived under the protection of the castle, which you can see in my photograph. It is worthwhile licking here to see the castle much clearer on Beta.

Barnard Castle - the castle, not the town - is one of the most historic castles in the north of England. It has been fought over, won and lost, by some of the most famous figures in English history. It has withstood seiges, and been successfully beseiged. It has been claimed by nobles, bishops, and kings - Wikipedia

It was built in the 12th century by Guy de Baliol, who also established the town, outside the castle walls.

You can see what a strong position was held by the castle, high on a hill and close to the river.

In 1630 it was sold to Sir Henry Vane, who robbed quite a lot of the stones to build his new Raby Castle, but there is still a lot of original castle remaining, to make it a very worthwhile experience.

Here will add a closer view of the castle as a workshop.

Thank you for your interest, Bev :-)
