Photographer's Note

Kirkby Stephen West Station stands about three miles outside Kirkby Stephen. At one time two stations served this small market town, the aforementioned West and Kirkby Stephen East, which was built by the North Eastern Railway.

This relic of the old company stands on the end of the footbridge over the line at Kirkby Stephen West Station. No longer in use, it would have been lit by gas during the heyday of the railways and a porter would have been detailed to go round every lamp and light them by hand every evening at dusk and every morning at daylight someone would be detailed to go round and turn them off again. These lamps probably survived longer here because it was many years before mains electricity reached the northern fells.
