Photographer's Note

Another picture from our frozen lake "Runn". The lake is about 10 x 25 km or so and full of islands and rocks so it is more of an inland archipelago. The lake is very popular both in summer and winter and there are some navigation marks as you can see. Some of them also have lights with solar panels and batteries but there are no real lighthouses :(

For winter navigation (skating) there is also an icechart with areas that usually have thin ice etc marked. When temperature and wind moves the ice it tends to break where it is restricted by the islands, allways in the same places. After hard weather those weak zones can be 2 - 3 m wide with just a thin layer of new ice on. As the water below is very cold and the edges of the ice slippery falling in to the water can cost your life if you don´t have the right equipment. The neccessary tool is a pair of nails with handles on, looking like screwdrivers, that you carry in a holder around the neck. It is a simple thing but try getting out of the water on wet ice without them!

The "road" of white ice is the scar of such a crack, after cracking the ice will get wet from water coming up through the crack and this will freeze. If it snows some snow will stick in that water and make the new ice white. Or maybe it gets white anyway by the reflection of the light in the joint between the layers, I not so sure which.
