Photographer's Note

From the village of Viscri in the Mures district, Transylvania region, central Romania.

This part of Transylvania is famous for a number of Saxon (medieval Germans) villages boasting spectacular churches that were transformed into virtual fortresses during the 15th and 16th centuries to protect the villagers from the Turkish forces that were in those days expanding the Ottoman influence in Europe.

Even today these villages have a distinct German atmosphere, although the number of German speaking inhabitants has gone down to virtually zero in the last decades.
