Photographer's Note

One of the most characteristic features of Porto is its beautiful river Douro. Along its banks lies the historical quarter of Ribeira (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO) and on the opposite side across the river, the town of Vila nova de Gaia, where all the cellars of the Porto wine are. So in my view, one of the best pleasure while visiting this charming city, is to have a stroll along one of these banks and enjoy the gay atmosphere one can find here day and night. This photo was shot in Cais da Ribeira, the barcos rabelos, the traditional sailing boats once used to carry the barrels of wine from the distant vineyards, and now converted to sightseeing tours for tourists, are moored here. Bars, restaurants, shops, etcs, are most of the time crowded with people and one can have a good choice of them. One can feel that the ocean is not far even it’s not possible to see it, the whole place has a strong maritime flavour which reminds of old good times.
